Cooker hood mandatory?

  • Like evokit says, any kitchen in a space that has been newly built or extended will require mechanical extraction to the outside. This can be by way of the extractor hood or a fan.

An extractor is always recommended for reasons already highlighted. The cheaper hoods have lower extraction capacity, higher noise levels etc. so look for one with high extraction capacity and check noise levels at lower extraction speeds. You ideally want one that gives you the extraction capacity you need at power level 2 or 3 so noise levels stay low. As with all things, you get what you pay for.

Look around - there are plenty of cooker hoods that will run at low noise levels, have design that wont get in the way of cooking and do an excellent job of extraction.

Your kitchen designer should be able to advise you and highlight suitable models.

The mechanical extraction doesn't have to be in the form of a cooker hood though, does it? Couldn't it just be an extractor fan on the wall.
