is this any good?

i have been asked to purchase this as a gift for a teenager. i am a definite beginner at anything technological and wondered whether anyone could give me a thumbs up or down. as far as he is concerned its a fantastic tablet that he can carry around with him accessing the net here there and everywhere. i am more of the old school where if something is being offered at as much as a saving as this it cant be that great but am happy to be proved wrong

Sorry, but I would not consider paying £230 for a no-name tablet from a web retailer I've never heard of.

If you search for Synapse DS72, you find nothing - no reviews, no feedback on the retailer, nothing.

There's also something I don't quite like about the website, but nothing major that I can pin down (other than the fact that the T&Cs link doesn't always take you to T&Cs) - they could be quite legit and just not be very good at website design for all I know...

What made him pick that specific tablet?

Have a look at this instead. It's a slightly lower spec but it's a brand from a reputable dealer.

I wouldn't buy that no-name tablet...it looks rubbish for the money.

at £230 for the cost of that noname tablet, he could easily buy a proper named one. Only £50~ more would get him an ipad2! (actully, that'd get him a Samsung galaxy too) About £250 can be used for a motorola xoom wifi too.
If he bought that, he'd be nuts, if you bought that for him, you'd be nuts too :D

He needs to stop being idealistic and first off work out just how he wants the net here, there and everywhere else. Whether he can provide for it via tethering (with proper addon/allowance through his mobile/not just the oh they'll never know attitude) or if he's hoping to rely on free wifi, which simply doesn't exist everywhere/has purchase catches, or if he's going to go down the mifi/mobile wifi hotspot units, or look at a 3G unit (and thus also suck up the monthly cost of using it)
It by far is not a fantastic tablet, however for that cost, with a little looking around, or for a bit extra, he could actually get a fantastic tablet!
