Selling Train Tickets On Ebay

In late March I was scheduled to attend a meeting in London. I now have to stay on for another meeting the following day so I listed my single train ticket from London to Edinburgh for sale on Ebay. Ebay have now removed the listing saying I am not an authorised ticket seller.

I only sell on Ebay very occasionally but I am not an authorised reseller for any of the items I have sold previously. Can anyone advise why train tickets are subject to this restriction?

Thank you.

  • You can just take the ticket back to the BR station and get a refund that way! Tickets are sold as non-transferable so I presume Ebay pulled it because of that.

Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.... life is a WIP.

It is not possible to sell train tickets in the UK so ebay are only following UK law:

    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/eurostar-tickets.html
The sale of all UK train tickets (including Eurostar tickets) by unauthorised persons is not permitted under the railway byelaws, made under Section 129 of the Railways Act 1993. Therefore, unless you are an authorised seller as described below, you may not list train tickets on eBay.

Obviously some listings never get reported so don't get pulled, but many do.

  • Apologies in resurrecting an old thread but the same thing has just happened to me.

I got some vouchers as compensation for train delays but no longer travel by train - stuck em on ebay and had the listing removed.

Any ideas how/where i can sell these?

A 'one day only' listing starting about now (late Saturday evening) may well complete before any ebay official notices. :D

You can often see this sort of thing (short term listings) for dodgy/unlicensed software.

Gumtree or your local paper? Or supermarket boards?
  • This is a warning to all whose travel plans are not set in stone!

I thought I had saved over 5o% by booking as soon as the advance tickets became available (my advance ticket was just under £60).

My travel plans changed - as well they might, within the 12-week window - and the small print states that refunds are not available, with exceptions such as the service not running / long delays.

Now I have lost my money and cannot legally resell my ticket. This is easy money for the train operating company (TOC).

Surely if the train company took my ticket back it could resell the seat at the standard fare?

If anyone has found a way around this, please could you post a reply?
  • I'm in the same situation... I bought my tickets in advance online and they are apparently non-refundable, which means £60 down the drain.

Just came across this website where people are selling their train tickets, although from what people have been saying here, I'm guessing it's not legal?

Although I don't see how the train company would know you'd transferred the tickets to someone else, I'd be wary doing it.

    Any suggestions much appreciated!
