Driving from Glasgow to Warner Bros Harry Potter Studio Tour. Good stopping spots?

Hi everyone.
As the title says, we are thinking about driving from Glasgow down to the Warner Bros Studio for the Harry Potter Tour, round about the first week of July (the start of the summer hols).
As it's such a long way, we are thinking of making a short break of it and stopping off to visit some places of interest on the way.
Could anyone give me some ideas and recommendations for places to visit, places to stay and to eat?
I would really appreciate ideas on good places to take the children, ranging in age from 10 to 17.
MSE ideas for this wallet-bursting trip would be very welcome too!
Linda

Depends what your kids want and like ... What about Jodrell Bank or if too intense Coventry Megabowl for a stop off . Both just off the Motorway. Trentham Gardens maybe too long a stay. Jump off M6 find shops @ trafford centre (mankchester) or Liverpool (M58) back on M62 to M6. hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

What or where is Jodrell Bank? Is it an attraction or activity centre?
Thanks for your ideas so far

Joderell Bank is an observatory ( big round radar dishes and museum. Great to nose around, but if your kids are easily bored, then maybe not for you.
On your road down the M^, you will go past Blackpool ( pleasure beach, bit of a diversion), Liverpool and manchester ( diversions too.). M6 junc 16 you have Stapely water gardens, big Garden centre, quite nice. Bit further down you have Alton towers.
Birmingham could be a good one for you. Do the Cadbury world tour at Bourneville, Just off M6. Quite good and you can visit factory shop for cheap goodies.
That is a bit of a trek you have though, are you overnighting it anywhere, must be 6-7 hours driving?0 -
Joderell Bank is a good idea , the 3D film is amazing .And the grounds would give the kids a place to let off some steam.
The H.P. experience is great , was lucky enough to get there on the very first day. Butter Beer is a bit expensive , but you can't not try it.0 -

Alton Towers would be a good one and plenty of 241 tickets about. Are you thinking of staying overnight anywhere as travelodge has some cheap deals. If you are going to the Harry Potter tour make sure you have tickets before you travel as you can`t just queue up and buy them. Or as someone suggested go into Liverpool for the day and head down to Albert Docks.Make £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.0
