Free Loft Insulation

Hi All
Not sure if this is the correct forum, but had no idea which other to post it.
We had someone come round our house the other day to offer us the free loft insulation via our energy supplier. Now, as far as I could see from this site it should be free, however, they say that the grant covers 80% and I should pay the other 20% at £209. I have asked EDF to come around and assess the house and let us know where they stand but this could be a few weeks away and the other company are coming to install on monday and I have until the end of today to put them off!!
So, is this normal? Should I have to pay towards it? And 20%?
Thanks for any help on this!

I would put them off. EDF did our loft and cavity insulation totally for free. Another company wanted to charge us £99. Tesco wanted to charge us £25 towards cavity wall and wouldn't do loft and so we enquired with EDF. EDF did our neighbour's, but said his loft insulation was ok (a bit strange as houses exactly same) and wanted to charge him £200, but we got it done all for free and we don't meet the usual free criteria of certain benefits, etc.Be not so busy making a living that you forget to make a life0

YES - Do the homework and try to get the Loft Insulation at the lowest price, or free, but do it quickly.
From my reading of the new 'Green Deal', the present system where these insulation improvements are paid for by the Energy suppliers ie All the Customers, will end and be replaced by 'Loans'.
On this system the householder, - After an 'Assessment' - is given a loan to get the work done, and the repayments are based on how much money the householder saves on fuel bills over X years.
My problems with this are that:
1)Nobody who thinks they will occupy the property for less that X years will bother.
2) How many Landlords are going to take on a Debt to cut their tenants fuel bills.?
3) Say the word 'Debt' to any elderly pensioner and they will run away as fast as their legs will carry them.0 -

I hope you have cancelled.0 -
How big is the loft?
Its only £8-10 a roll at B&Q and an average loft might only take between 4-8 rolls.
With some rubber gloves, overalls and a mask it only takes a few hours to do.
£200+ is NOT 20% of what this should cost.0 -
I've had it from B&q at £1 a roll, check to see if they have it on offer.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

I bought space blanket from B&Q, it took me about 30 min todo the whole lost and no messDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Thanks all for your replies! I did postpone the appointment and will wait for the EDF people to come over. I shall also look into doing it myself....
Cheers all!!!0 -

After having someone on the doorstep today about this I have been looking at the Green Deal and pretty much come to the same conclusion as you. They were not happy to answer what happens after October when the deal comes in as the way they were portraying it we would be breaking some law by not having had it done.
We have loft insulation but these companies keep saying we probably don't have enough, it will need topped up. The attic is floored and it is insulated under it and the say they can put more on top of flooring, maybe they can but that would mean we lose all our storage space, 75% of attic, only 25% is unfloored and they didn't seem keen to just top up the 25% section.
Don't you just love doorstep sales people! lol!!0 -

The price of the other 20% is quite costly I would say! The company I just did mine costs about £99 ( of course it also depends on your loft size). However, £209 sounds overcharged to me :eek:0 -
Why aren't you people just getting this done for free with Tesco?0
