Virus whilst on eBay?

I was in my eBay account and clicked summary and then 2 boxes popped up (one on top of the other) The bottom box (from what I could see of it) was a download box (it was on 0%). The top box said something like 'Do you want to download this file? Files can potentially have viruses.' and had buttons 'save' and 'cancel'. I pressed the x in the corner and both boxes closed.
This has never happened in my 10 years of being with ebay. Should I be concerned? I have all the protection thanks to the great people of this forum for helping me protect my computer. I'm currently running avast full system scan.

Did you catch the name of the file it wanted you to download?
I've had it before on eBay, when it comes up asking me to download a .dll or .php file. It's always been just a bug for me; either eBay or my browser slipping up. Instead of rendering the content it thinks it should be downloading it.

Unlikely to be anything to worry about.

If it was an executable (.exe), then it's possible ebay was displaying a malvertisement at the time you visited.

It wouldn't be the first time.

You can help mitigate any potential threat by making sure your PC, browser & other installed software is fully up to date.

    Malvertising, who’s responsible?

I remember the file had 'ebay' in the title and I think it was a .dll but not 100% sure. It just looks familiar.

Avast full system scan found no threats.

Thank you for putting my mind at ease :)

unfortantly no antivirus is 100% and you can still get stuff. It is possible that you where almost a victim of a stored XSS attack. Or it could be somthing in ur browser doing it. dont rely on antivirus to protect u

Whatever you do don't install Nortan... it's basically a legal virus in itself. Try AVG they are really good.

As a now retired IT Manager for a university, I hope I can be of help in techie areas.

    The first comment is unusual/wrong/misleading.

Norton is a highly functioned set of software tools including an anti-virus. It is for people who know what they are doing and has to be 'driven' properly. It does not like sitting alongside any other AV or anti-malware product. Used properly it will keep your PC safe and running at a good speed.

Having evaluated all the leading AV anti-mail products professionally, for a paid product you would do well with Sophos. For a free AV only go for AVG free. (Get the free version not the 30 day trial free version). This will also run alongside Malwarebytes.

    Hope this helps

PS You MUST use Norton's own uninstall package to completely remove the program. You cannot do this via Windows Control Panel/Add or remove programs!!!

You may have inadvertently clicked 'save as' when you clicked the button, easily done on a laptop?

Never had any pop-ups on eBay myself but often even if you have picked up a virus it will often operate in the background for some time before launching popup and downloads.

Agree with the recomendation of Malwarebytes and AVG, been using these for some time and they seem to keep things pretty clean whilst not slowing performance too much.

Why don't you try reading at this link then........
Then you might learn something from an independent test
    http://www.av-comparatives.org/en/comparativesreviews/dynamic-tests
Click on the PDF file Whole product Dynamic Tests November December Report (English)
See page 13 for the summary.
Best were Symantec/Norton, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Qihoo, f-Secure, G-data.

I'l leave you to find out where AVG figures in the list.

Their March 2012 factsheet has a graph that puts AVG in a fairly high placing?

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/dyn/avc_factsheet2012_03.pdf

We tested all the major players in lab conditions with viruses, trojans, malware etc and we chose Sophos for the university.

If I were buying one, then this is what I would choose.

For a free version, AVG is very effective, especially when used in conjunction with Malwarebytes.

However, nothing is as good as sensible precautions when surfing or emailing!

The best way to handle viruses is to have your user profile backed up (to date), have a note of all drivers needed for your hardware and to re-install the OS from your legal disk from scratch and then copy over your profile data!

PS Use "Y-Copy" to move/copy large amounts of files as this will skip bad files and NOT halt the process. This is freeware.
