internet access outside of home

i apologise now if this is already on here somewhere under a more suitable title. but i have a wireless laptop and today bought a proper bag to make it more portable. but is it??? as in will i be able to just sit in starbucks and tap away on the net by picking up a signal from somewhere?? i know this sounds a bit vague but not an expert on subject just thought if it is wireless and portable surely i can do a search on it to find a nice restaurant if away for the weekend???? or i am i barking up the wrong tree and the people i see tapping away in various public places on word doc or something. have seen signs saying something about connections being possible. but am i getting confused with another service and if i am understanding it all better than i thought, just how easy is it to pick up on other peoples signal???? any help would be cool

one of the mse guys had a searching system for free wifi somewhere

one thing to keep in mind though is if you connect up to any random wifi its likely to be an unsecured connection meaning people can access your machine and the data your sending by my understanding
