Paying the wrong person

Options
I went to send a pyament from my personal account last night to o0ne of the guys that has done work for me, he was already set up on my payment info, but stupidly didnt check before i clicked confirm and sent the payment to the next line down in my list of payment people on my account, being southern water,) I rang natwest and they told me they couldnt stop and pull the payment as i done it on online banking. Now I have to claim back from southern water. Is there anything to stop southern water keeping this money somehow? . The payment was for £1944!

thanks all
Chris

  • Hi,

if SW is your supplier they will presume that you are paying money into your account, so contact them and explain.

Should think that they will refund, could take a few days, unless of course, you owe them money.

You call Southern Water and you say "Hello, I sent a lot of money to you and I don't owe you it, could you please send it back", and they will be able to remit it back to you. It may not be quick, and they may have to send you a cheque, but they will get it back to you.

The good thing about you sending it to a big company like them is that you stand a far better chance of getting it back from them than you do if it was someone you no longer know who'd be much less cooperative about returning £2k that someone has just gifted to them. As far as mistakes go, this one is at least easily fixable.
