Yes there are - take a look at, for example, the Humax Foxsat receiver/PVRs.0

FreeSat is what you want. Not Sky's Freesat thing.
All you need is a Satellite receiver with an internal harddrive and dual tuner. Unhook you sky box and connect the new receiver, tune and learn how to record etc and it should do what you need.

There are many Linux based receivers and some can play media files too.0 -
If you are a Sky subscriber then Sky+ is standard.
If you need a box they can be picked up cheaply off fleebay.
( You might need to upgrade your LNB)That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Humax pvr?I have one and it is excellent"Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0

But it wont record Sky programs though will it?
AFAIK for viewing sky TV programs then you need both a sky receiver and a subscription.
If the OP had a sky+ box and it has gone faulty then I would suggest trying Freegle/Freecycle to see if they can get one for free or ebay to buy one or try the current round of offers from sky that may get you HDTV free for 12 months (did for me) when I buy a HD box for only £15. In 8months time I will be cancelling HD but then have a box that can record much more than standard sky+ boxes did. (although now HD is the standard).0 -

When you say cancel HD, won't that mean you can no longer receive sky hd channel's. Or have they removed the charge for receiving HD channel's. (they keep changing there price structure's, so not sure what they charge anymore)Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
If you can get a Virgin TiVo, I believe they let you subscribe to Sky channels and record.
I used to have a Series 1 Thomson TiVo that recorded from my regular Sky box but it died some years back.0 -
