How to get rid of pop up advert

Hi,
My sons laptop keeps randomly displaying adverts and music even when the laptop is on but not being used, I am puzzled why this is happening, the advert display Bing in the right hand corner and to stop it playing I have pressed the escape key, it is so annoying if anyone can help I would be grateful.

Which version of Windows? does your son use MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger at all?How do I add a signature?0

Sure it's not the screensaver? Some laptops come with loads of rubbish pre-installed on them these days.0
