Second floor/mezzanine in chapel

Hello

This property caught my eye but has one or two less bedrooms than we need, so I am wondering if it would be possible add a full or partial second floor to the chapel room?

The windows would have to be worked around but if the celings were high enough would it be possible whilst still giving good light to the lower floor? Can mezzanine levels be enclosed to offer privacy?

The other part of the building is the same height and over two levels.

The dimensions of the room are 29'4 x 21, does anyone think would it big big enough to make it worth doing?

Thanks you,

Sarah x

Yes - go for it. Seen several conversions with a mezz floor. Works fine.

It is not going to be cheap, thats for sure.

The ones I have seen on programmes like Grand designs and Restoration man have needed a lot of steel fitted into the walls. It is the steel which costs a fortune.

It depends how open plan you want the floor below your mezzanine. If you wanted to deivide the area below in two you could certainly have a supporting wall with timber joists spanning. As above the steel frame would be the costly part, but its not the only method.

  • Many thank for your comments.

I am going to view the chapel on Monday and take my tape measure to see if the ceiling height in the second half of the building is enough to accomodate my boyfriend! Then we will have a proper think about how much it will cost to do what we need to to the hall to give us the space we need.

That hardly looks high enough to divide into two. The windows upstairs will end about 4feet above the floor or even less, by the look of it.
I am all in favour of the reuse of old buildings, but I would need to look very closely at this one to see if a mezzanine floor would be feasible. Best of luck with it.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
