Yes possibly, but putting Waxsol (about £2!) which is a watery solution in your ear is considerably less messy and more appealing than olive oil. Also we are talking about a deep flush which Waxsol can do being thin and sterile. I wouldn't advise anyone to put non sterile food deep inside their ear.

It may not work for everyone of course, but I DO know just clearing earwax CAN stop your ears hurting, but thanks for your input.

You may not advise it but GPs and practice nurses do , admittedly it can be a little messy but you dont need much in your ear, only a drop twice a day and it only needs leaving for a few minutes before you can the wipe any excess, of course if its really bad your GP practice will syringe your ears which is also free!

I have suffered from ear pain for years, a more radical way might be giving up e.g. Wheat and dairy, as sinus pain clears up no end when avoided - for many people.

Of course, I am no doctor so do your own research/ test!
  • Last year when I flew I used nasal decongestant just prior to the plane starting it's descent it seemed to do the trick for me - very little pain and deafness only lasted a matter of minutes rather than days.

    I use Earplanes too.
They have a valve which helps to reduce the pressure. They are not always perfect as some (or even all) of the problem is connected to the speed and angle of plane's descent. If you cruise in over Africa say it is much less painful because the aircraft descends very gradually. The Earplanes need to be put in an hour before landing. One pair is meant to last for just one return journey! They do last longer.
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

My daughter suffers terribly from this, prior to a flight we use olive oil eardrops from Tesco for a few weeks.
  • I can also recommend taking decongestant, made a huge difference for me and I have suffered badly previously.

I'm cabin crew and when i have a cold and my ears gets blocked its soooooo painful! Then i'm out of work.

Only things i do are take decongestants and to sniff menthol crystals ALOT. The only thing that ever works though is time for it to clear. I have no idea what advice to give other than the menthol crystals. Perhaps sniff that on landing?

I heard that putting ear drops in before flying provides fluid in the ear which helps prevent the pain. I am lucky because I do not suffer so not sure if it works.
