Thanks to all for your input.
There are microchips available which are much smaller than others.
Older style microchips are 12mm x 2mm where as smaller mini-microchips are available which are 8mm x 1.4mm and correspondingly require a smaller diameter needle, 11 gauge for mini microchips (as opposed to 15 gauge for the older type) so minimising discomfort. That is 44% smaller.

The vet gave us the bag the chip came in - I've checked it and it is labelled 12mm - so I reckon the inserting needle was 15gauge.
Are the smaller chips/smaller needles standard now?

Some animals react more than others, just like to vaccines and other injections.

Size does not matter, more practitioner skill and holding! I have chipped 7 week old kittens with no ill effects.

However some charities set age limits of 8 or 12 weeks. It is sad the new chipping laws have not set a minimum age cats and dogs should be shipped by to ensure safe passage to a good home.

I don't think they are standard for the smaller mini-chips. They haven't been available long. I was made aware of them when I embarked on a City and Guilds course in December last. https://www.micro-id.co.uk
