Car Insurance - Student (Decent quote?)

Actually he is because he has a Merc which he isnt keen on driving to work and as Honda Civics are reliable engines he said he will drive it to work, that alone means he will clock more miles than I could possibly do. Even if I drive everyday he will meet me when it comes to how many miles he does every week.
How do I check what group a car comes under? Civics are expensive as I have heard and may be looking for something different e.g. corolla.
Something that has a good and relaible engine which can do long distances for my brothers sake:mad: .
What will happen if he hits the car onto someone else or I do it? We surely wont be treated differently? Its third party-fire and theft insurance so obviously we wont be covered!0 -
Can you afford to replace the car if it were written off? If not then you really need fully comp insurance.
Parkers.co.uk will tell you the insurance groups of cars.
The other thing is that you need to insure it in your name, but state that your brother (as named driver) is the main driver (if he is). You won't be treated differently but insurers won't like insuring your car in your brother's name as there is no legal entity between you. If your car was stolen, they would have to pay the policy holder for the car - and they would want that to be the legal owner.:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:A

If the car belongs to you but you insure it in someone elses name but with you as a named driver the insurance company will immediately be suspicious.
If its your car, owned and registered ti you it should be insured in your name as you are the one with the insurable interest not your BIL.
And yes lots of people in your college may have their cars insured under someone elses name and they are named driver. This is still fraud and just because they do it it doesnt mean its rightBaby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
The different between third party and full comp would be far greater than the cost of the car so Im alright with sticking to third party.
Insurance companies are total rip-offs IMHO, just look at what they charge, most of the people dont even claim so they are more or less getting 100% profit from many of their customers!
What car would be low on insurance? I was told that Civic's are classed as a sports car hence insurance companies price the insurance quote really high. I dont want a Micra or anything, something like or similar to a Corolla Si which is the shape I like, can spend £1,000 on a new car MAX!
Any reccomendations?0 -

So, your saying around 500 students ATLEAST in my college are fraudulent? I dont think so. If they were dont you think the insurance company would have done somehting about it? Having a main driver and you as an additional driver isnt fraudulent when the main driver actually does drive it more.
I'll get the main driver, my brother in law, to buy the car and register it to his name, thats not a problem. That would sort out the confusion right?0 -
A 1 litre group 1 small car such as a corsa or a fiesta would be cheapest to insure. as someone has already said, if you check out Parkers Guide they have a list of all the car groupings.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

Yes your college friends are being fraudulent. they are lucky they have not been caught out. I have years and years of experience in the insurance field, and I have seen plenty of insurance policies voided when its come to making a claim as the car is driven by son or daughter and is insured under mum or dad or whoever elses name. but if you want to take the risk its up to you.
Please dont tell me I dont know what I am talking about, this is what i do day to day as a job. If you dont want to take my advice then fine.
Yes your brother in law could say the car is his. Then he would have to say the car is kept at his address, but it wont be it will be kept at yours, Again you will be on dodgy ground. If he was living at same address as you it would be easier.
besides, if you get a cheap group 1 car, insure it under your name, you will then be building your own no claims bonus ready for when you can afford the car you really want.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -

Not true - just shows that you don't understand how it works at all.
My premium for my £35k car is around £800 per year with max ncb.
I've just made a claim for £8.5k worth of damage.
Not only have they not profited on my policy, but on several others, I'd expect!
In most companies, the amount paid out in claims is more than they get in premiums - it's the investing of funds that makes them their money.:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:A

probably, if they're doing what you describe.
I have insured my car for my teenage son when he was learning to drive and it cost a fortune - I am the main driver. It cost me around £2k. Maybe they are rip off merchants but honest folks who insure their cars have to pay the price for people who are fraudulent....
Some of these honest folks count get a tad p'd off and start informing the insurers of what appears to be large scale fraud....0
