    You've changed your tune McTittish.

Whenever there is a renting v buying argument you always say it costs next to nothing to maintain a house.

    You silly boy.

I think you miss the point too.

It's ONLY Hamish's house...and his BTL friends, whose houses cost nothing to run.

Everyone else should go out, spending on home accesories, furnishings and DIY, so that Hamish can turn around and suggest you want it all now and give you a good talking down.

Although I was hoping/expecting very slight growth, the truth is that the economy's been doing badly for years now. At least this is out in the open now.

Plus it might actually mean that the Government take deregulation seriously instead of simply talking about deregulation for political 'points'.

Why is " economic growth" so important? Why do Labour think its better to borrow money and waste it in order to create false "economic growth"?

I'd rather have a balanced government budget and a substainable economy than one inflated by large government taxes and spending.
Indeed. Consumer's savings ratios have improved markedly since 2009 and business is being more cautious too by 'bulking up' their balance sheets/assets where possible. Plus the Govt deficit is coming down - albeit waaay too slowly.
Lordy, that means we have to put up with Ed Balls' insufferably smug mug everywhere today. Just what the nation needs.
True. Even though the Govt have (IMO) been useless the past month or so, I still can't stand to hear anything Balls or Miliband have to say.

    Not nothing.

Just not the new roof, boiler, kitchen and bathroom every 5 minutes that you lot claim is the case every time you want to lie about maintenance costs to make yourselves feel better.

But I've never disputed that most people like to redecorate and refurnish when they move house or shortly thereafter.

So it's obviously a significant loss to the economy when house sales are at 40% of normal.

Far fewer houses being built is also a huge loss to the economy.

And another huge loss to the economy from associated services, from moving costs (which you have previously claimed on repeated occasions are large), to solicitors fees, to brokers, etc etc etc.

You can wriggle all you like Graham, but no rational person can claim that the housing market is not a significant percentage of the economy.

    .

It does, on an individual basis.

But when you multiply that by 25 million houses, it's not next to nothing in the big scheme of things.

Don't expect construction to turn round when industrial units which cost £600 per sq m to build are being valued by lenders valuers at £400 per sq m.

Have people stopped maintaining them now then?

I'm confused. Maybe I miss the point. I think you'll find they are, they are just not taking on debt to do so in such high numbers, which obviously pains you.

It tells me that we have a nation of highly paid politicians and economists that have no idea of what the european and national economy is going to do next.

We have a plan for defecit reduction, but no plan for growth, all based on projections and figures that are flawed and inaccurate.

As the chancellor said we need a magic wand to sort this out, anyone know where we could buy one?

This is actually a very good point, as all of the governments figures were based on lower inflation than we have now and higher growth than we have now.

Which obviously leaves a rather large hole.
