Red-Light Camera

Morning All,

I hate it when things like this happens due to a temporary lapse...

This morning I stopped at a junction with the said camera. The junction had a right turn controlled by a traffic light but I was going straight on anyway. The right-turn turned green so I started to go but realised my light was still on red. By this point I had reached near the end of the crossing which was about 2m over the line (the crossing is directly after the line)

I didn't notice the camera flash, but could I of had my picture taken?

Maybe. Just like speed camera, you will need to wait up to 14 days for the penalty notice to arrive.

If you didn't notice a flash, you may well have got away with it.

They didn't even notice their own light was on red. What do you think the chances of noticing a flash are?

Quite high - a flash is going to be far more noticeable than a steady light.

If the right turn was green, the camera was probably off, otherwise it would be picking up the cars moving to turn right. And lights to the sides would have been on red, so no great danger apart from traffic coming opposite, if they had a right filter as well.

If this is daytime, the flash can actually be quite subtle. I've sat behind a car that set off the same redlight camera 3 times - they set it off by stopping 2 meters over the line, set it off again by reversing and set it off a third time when they decided that red+amber = go!

If you're not looking for it, it could easily be missed.

That said, Mikey72s point is still valid.
  • Definitely didn't miss it, it was at about 6.30am so wasn't that bright anyway. Plus whenever a truck or car flash or anything I always notice it so would of seen it

Just wondered about the structure of the cameras. To activate the camera would you have to:
    1. cross the line
    2. cross the line AND enter the junction, or
    3. cross the line enter the junction and carry on

I only crossed the line by about 2meter (front wheels) and was not in the junction at all, just the crossing

Cross the line far enough to trigger the inductive loops buried in the road. You can see where they are as there's usually a square of black sealant-looking stuff, a bit like a roadworks patch.

And the loops have to actually be working, which often isn't the case!
