Need a down stairs bedroom

Hi all
Not sure were's best to ask this so put it in the benefits and tax credit aswell
It is becoming very hard for me to get upstairs to bed. At the mo im sleeping on the sofa. It would be really helpfull to have a bedroom downstairs. We are thinking of converting the garage which is on the side of the house into a bedroom. Now to the question is there any grants or anything that would help pay for this. Im on ESA income related support group and high rate DLA for mobililty and middle rate care. Any help would be great. many thanks sparky

Councils have a Disabled Facility Grant for this purpose. Ring your local council and ask for a referral tot he Occupational Therapy department. It can take several months, though, and is means tested.

The other thing to consider if your stairs are suitable is a stair lift. Grants for these are also means tested and I believe it's social services who will refer you for one.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Is it means tested if you live in council accommodation or is it just home owners. I am enquiring on behalf of a relative of mine that lives in council flat.
