Do car makers recommend specific types of petrol? BP. Shell, Esso? If so, does it really make a difference to the engine performance?

Some cars require Super Unleaded, like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution XIII, but apart from these super cars which will only run on Super, I don't think it matters
Although some manufactures work with companies (like Ferrari work with Shell) but any petrol will do0 -
Sometimes the additives do make a difference; for instance my Peugeot with a 1.9 litre XUDT engine prefers Shell and Sainsburys's diesel and is thirstier and rougher with Tesco, but when I had a newer car with a 2.0 HDi engine I found it was the other way around.
Overall though it's a pretty minor point.Debt at highest: September 2003 - £26,350
Debt now: £14,100
Debt free day: October 2008 :beer:0 -
Most car manufacturers recommend a minimum octane that is required and some have connections with certain oil and petrol companies and so recommend them.Perhaps they have done some research,or maybe they just help each other out!
I have used optimax quite alot but it is expensive, although it is said it gives better mpg and performance on certain vehicles. There are two sides to every story.

If possibly stick to petrol company stations not supermarket stuff,
When I had a petrol car i loved optimax unfortunatly it didnt love my car and regularly caused it to over heat that was a few years ago now, If i used normal fuel it didnt over heat.
I have a diesel astra now and it loves shell diesel I get better economy from shell than BP diesel for some strange reason. If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Any fuel should be fine as long as that fuel meets the minimum standards required by the car manufacturer. This information should be in the car's handbook. If not then find a better car manufacturer!0
