you seem to be suggesting that the postie can then decide not to deliver those items of post. I don't believe that's true. It's not down to them to decide if anyone lives there or not, or if post should be delivered or not.
Do you really think posties will take mail out when they KNOW someone doesn't live at that address? The posties sort out their "Gone Aways" before they leave the office. Sometimes ones they know have gone away, some that have been marked as Return to Sender, some that have expired redirections. No postie would do this without absolutely knowing, for example, having 10 letters for same person, returned the previous day marked as not at this address.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
My postman apologises for giving me letters for previous occupants, he has told me they have to deliver to the address even if they know the person isn't there'd.0

I would say that the reason that you have been advised not to obsecure the address is to prevent mail fraud.
Otherwise, technically, you could use "Return to Sender" for any item of mail that you needed to send to a specific company....0 -

I once got attacked with a bat & stabbed(minor wound) for delivering a letter as addressed!
your postie is right however you can't win.
folks moan about getting mail for other folks, other folk are fine and realise the issue of having to deliver as addressed.0 -
When I moved into my current house, I was constantly getting mail for the previous 2 lots of occupants.
I ended up getting a large rubber stamp made up:
RETURN TO SENDER
"No longer at this address, please remove details from mailing list.
And every unwanted letter was red stamped over the delivery address (it could still be read) and on the back and dropped in the post box.
The stamp only cost a couple of £s, and I'm still using it now.0 -
I write "return to sender" on all the unsolicited junk that I receive. I'm on the mail preference register, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
I also "post back" the flyers that Royal Mail gets paid to deliver.
If it's mail I don't want, it goes in the nearest post box.0 -
