Removal companies - how much approx?

We are thinking about moving ourselves when we move house and just hire a large van for the day. But I do want to find out how much it costs to use a removal company (save husbands back etc!).

I know it depends on locations and how much stuff you have, but if you've used a removal company before (we never have) could you a rough estimate on how much it costs?

We currently have a small two bedroom house with not too much stuff, just the usual....

It cost us about £450 to move from a 3 bedroom house & we only moved half a mile but the cost will also depend on how far you are moving & when. There are websites that can give you rough quotes (pickfords is one of them) so you can get an idea. And if you have a lot of stuff to move it's definately worth the extra money. Hope everything goes well for you.
  • It costs us £1200 (!!) to move from a 2 bed flat to a 3 bed house 2 miles away, I am in London.

Its costing us £12.50 for the insurance on a 7.5 tonne vehicle, as we know someone who will provide us with it hire free (and of course to make good the fuel we use), lots of family members who have booked the day off work (so probably fish & chips x ? for lunch) and luckily our vendor has given us the keys to the garage at exchange since the property is already empty so we will be moving boxes every evening for the next week too. It will save us well over £500 which will help with the redecoration costs.
  • If you only have a small 2 bed I would definitely do it yourself. My friend moved this weekend and paid £550 for a company to do it. Fair enough - it meant they didn't have the hassle themselves. But I hired a jumbo transit for the weekend for £90 when I moved and easily transported plenty of junk (!) and beds, sofas etc from a two bed place without too much effort.

Last time we moved was from a 1 bed to 2 bed flat in London. we hired a large van for £45 for the day from National (who were great). Looked into cost of moving from where we are to a bigger place recently and the cost was about £800 for a service where they pack everything for you. Needless to say I'm sticking to packing my own boxes!

We moved from a 3 bed terrace and it cost £450. It was a hideous day with the heaviest rain. The removal men were delightful, they made the move so much easier and were definitely worth it.
We're in Birmingham and we used Jobsons.
    Best of luck!

I'm paying £150 to move from a small two bed flat, to another flat appx 30 miles away. That gets me 2 men with a 3.5 tonne van, plus boxes to pack in (doing my own packing). I don't have that much to move really, as I rent so no large kitchen appliances etc, and I reckon it will all fit in the van.

Hi, this is my first attempt at this and am not sure I am doing this correctly. But in addition to this thread, what firms would you recommend, as I am due to move on June 4th and have no idea who is a good firm to hire a van? Or would you recommend hiring a man with a van? Please help as am desperate for help!

We have been quoted anywhere between £450 and £1200 (Pickfords) to move a few miles down the road. It also seems the more desparate you sound, the higher the price.
