Can i set up a standing order alongside a direct debit?

or is it one or the other?

Yes you can. You could set up several SOs if you wanted to one credit card account.

If you have a DD set up some card providers will take your DD regardless of any other payments you make. Other card providers will not take your DD if you have already paid more than that since the statement date and before they request the DD payments.

If your card is the latter sort then set up the SO to be after the DD date.
