wired mouse with a round connection where to buy?

The wired mouse socket on my machine is circular but the only type of mouse now commonly available have USB connection. If I am unable to find one with a round connector will a USB one work on my machine?

Thanks for any replies.

For a direct replacement you need a mouse with a PS2 plug, but as mentioned above a USB one will work.
How do I add a signature?

Unfortunately those "convert" USB mice to plug into a PS/2 socket on the PC. And recent USB mice don't allow this.

However most PS/2 mice are those with rubber balls to indicate the movement, not 'optical' mice. I have a large box of them which I haven't yet got round to recycling...

Unfortunately not all PC's support USB mice correctly. Anything other than an operating system such as windows doesn't always work with a USB mouse unless there is Bios support which does USB mouse emulation for ps/2. In those rare events when Dos programs are run, drivers are needed which are a really nuisance.

There are still loads of ps/2 mice available and most are optical.

That is true about the converters, I had a crap logitech 1500 mouse that was usb and would not work with one of those converters. A rubbish mouse which kept disconnecting from usb and the mouse pointer would stop for several seconds. There might of been a tiny break in the cable causing that although that wasn't the only problem because the mouse had a mind of it's own, moving tabs, drop down box items etc on it's own accord.

I purchased an optical usb/ps/2 mouse on monday for an older PC. Ones which are usb & ps/2 compatible are the best to go for because at least they will work even if they use a converter, which they frequently do.
