Floor Sanding - Sanding Sheets

We have recently moved into a new house (new for us anyway). the house needs a lot of work and of course there's a very limited pot in which to dip.
We'd like to sand the floors in many of the rooms before getting some rugs, carpet and so on to put down.
While the cost of the sander hire is quite reasonable (HSS have a sale at the mo - it's around £20pd) the cost of the sanding sheets when bought from the hire centre is likely to become a very big hidden cost. At £2.50+ per time and the freq recommendation to use around three types of sheet grains per floor (and needing multiples of each) the cost will quickly become prohibitive.
Does anyone know the kind of sheets HSS sanders require (or any of the big hire stores) - because many people sell them online (eBay, online stores) but I can't tell which one will fit...
Any advice would be much appreciated.
