make do and mend - a tip please

we are going on a holiday of a lifetime to Disneyworld Florida. As the holiday has coast so much, we have been working really hard to control the other holiday related spending (so we can have more to spend in US). i.e. instead of buying new denim shorts for my kids, i have cut up their old jeans.

I wanted new sandals. I have some, which were adorned with some kind of cheap but extremely sparkly crystals / diamonontes. They have gone very dull, but the rest of the show is fine, soI would like to know if anyone has any tips for rejuvinating their sparkle. As they are ot real, i don't think jewelry cleaner would be any good. I have tried...... white vinegar, coke, washing powder, but no joy.
Hope someone can help.
Karen

What about removing the current sparklies and glueing some new ones on instead?
Otherwise, perhaps check out Ebay for a pair of new sandals - they're the kind of shoe that is going to be easy enough to wash so you may find some barely worn ones that do the job.

You could look somewhere like a £1 shop or perhaps Wilkinson's for some alcohol ink permanent markers and colour the crystals yourself to new shades. It's only the alcohol based pens which will do this successfully, not the water based ones.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

What about using some clear nail varnish?

    Or even coloured!

  • thanks everyone. I really liked them sparkly rather than coloured and I can't replace them because they are 'strings of crystals' fastened to the toes post and then to the top of the foot area. - Not doing a great job of 'selling these to you, but they are nice ...... honest!!!

Think hubby has some rubing alcahol in shed, might give that a try. Else i'll just HAVE TO get new ones.

Buy some new sandals in America. When we used to holiday there, we used to come home with cases full of clothes and shoes because they were so cheap.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • Hi all,

Just a word of caution...Disney is HUGE and Orlando is hot. There is an awful lot of walking to be done..and don`t forget Universal and all the other attractions.

DON`T WEAR NEW/UNBROKEN SHOES FOR YOUR HOLIDAY.

Wear knackered old trainers that you know won`t let you down. People are not going to notice your footwear lol. I`d advise on wearing socks too as your feet get slippery when you sweat, or when you get a soaking on a water ride.Wear sparkley sandles for a quick trip to a restaurant in the evening, but make sure that even for a short time that they are comfortable.

    What do I know?
Why should you listen to me?

Been there, done that, worn the Mickey t-shirt, rushed to the chemist and nearly ruined my holiday.

BUT I`D DO IT ALL AGAIN TOMORROW - YOU WILL LOVE IT.
