sorry, deleted what I wrote. It was about me having to wait so long for a courtesy car, but it turns out I was partly at fault, and now insurance is being great.

Sorry to have wasted anyone's time.

As it's ten years old, how much was the car worth? How much is your excess? It may not even be worth putting a claim in.

And if it's written off then you possibly won't get one for that reason.

I doubt very much you will get one, they tend to be a luxury afforded to claimants where the loss can be pursued from a third party.
Good advice also offered about is it worth claiming, they do get every penny back and more as your premiums will rocket for many years to come, even if you change company, more you cost them, more they will go up and stay up.

  • Hi Moggymutt
If your vehicle is repaired, then the repairing garage will provide you with a courtesy car at their expense, it will be part of the insurers contract with their approved repairer that they do this.

If your vehicle is written off then, unless you have purchased additional 'hire car' or 'replacement vehicle' insurance then its unlikely that you will receive a courtesy car I'm afraid.

As above,a courtesy car is provided by the bodyshop while the car is in for repair-not prior to repairs starting and if it is written then repairs never start so no car either. If you were not at fault try and get a hire car from the other partys insurers.

If your insurance is paid monthly, work out your excess + the cost of the rest of the policy and take this from the bottom book price for the car, such as a private sale in Autotrader.
Insurance companies dont use these fantasy pie high in the sky price guide books when looking at write off values, they research for sale sites and pay the "street" price

Well, everything moved really quickly after my posting my original post- got the ok for courtesy car, the company I was to get it from hadnt got an available courtesy car, but had a van. Since it was a Fordranger truck that I wrote off, and I've always had vans before, I get to pick up a courtesy van tomorrow- brilliant! It was only by chance they'd mentioned the van to me- suppose most people expect and want a car.

The truck I wrote off was still worth about £6k because those trucks fetch good money for that age, and mine had only 88 000 on the clock- most I've seen advertised are 120 000+.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

ps given the severity of the crash, I can recommend the Fordranger for keeping me and my dog safe. The outside was a shambles, but the inside stayed perfect, even after having repeatedly hitting an enbankment and then crashing down onto the drivers side.

Dog seat belt will be fitted in next car- she stayed safe this time because she managed to squeeze in tight behind my left arm, so didnt get flung across the car when it went on its side.

Because my truck is a write off, my insurance supplies a courtesy car (van) for 2 weeks.
