Electric pre-payment meter

I pay an absolute fortune on my pre-payment key meter so its time to change.

I've been looking at my meter today and trying to work out how much it costs me.

My electric is supplied by British Gas. Do they charge for Electric in 2 different tiers, or have i read this wrong?

My meter just gives me a figure of 12.51 per Kwh - does this sound about right?

I've not had anyone out to read my meter and i cant even remeber the last time they sent me a bill.

Their unit prices are on the house website. They will vary from region to region. They charge a higher rate for the first 225 kwh electricity you use per quarter, after that you pay a lower rate. This is because you don't have to pay a seperate standing charge, it is incorporated into the unit prices.

I think on a prepayment meter the tier structure is usually calcualted weekly, but I'm not 100% on that.

The keymeters can usually be updated and read remotely, so you won't always see a meter reader. Statements are only sent once a year for prepayment accounts.

Try Ebico one flat rate for gas and electricity for prepay customers no standing charges
  • I've decided to switch to Ebico, applied last night for it.

I really need to start understanding how my meter works, but the 12.51 is correct, i've checked it on a leaflet they sent me.

I have no idea when quaters start or finsh though or when i will use 225 kwh  , like i said, i need to learn all about this lol!

On a normal meter, it is read approximately every 91 days, and this is what is defined as a quarter for billing purposes.

On a prepayment meter, I'm pretty sure it's broken down to be calculated either daily or weekly.
