I'm a very confused female with a problem :)

Hello,
I am hoping someone can help me or point me in the right direction.
I bought a car off someone 14 months ago. When I tried to sell it, I found out it has been a write off 2 weeks before I bought it. Cat D. My fault for not checking , I know it now.
The people who sold it to me don't want to know and I think there's nothing I can do.
The car started showing an F for fault and now won't go into gear. From what I have been told, the gearbox needs changing and something else called engine emission sensor.
I know nothing about cars and don't know if I can trust people like Kwik Fit and also I haven't got a trusted mechanic.
I can't really sell it as people are offering £600. It's Vauxhall Corsa 2004, easytronic, semi automatic.
I can spend a couple of hundred pounds to get it fix but would like to be sure there aren't more problem.
Would it be a good idea to take it to Kwik Fit? Won't they just make stuff up cause I'm a woman ?
Thank you :)

If its a knackered easytronic gearbox then unfortunately its time for the great scrappy in the sky. It will cost an arm and leg to fix.

Google for a decent local independent garage. Don't go near Kwik Fit.

Where you located some here might know.

cat d has nothing to do with your gearbox problem
on this car they are a problem waiting to happen
    i wont touch the things
kwick fit cant help you either
it might be an internal solenoid
best advise is find a federation member of auto gearbox repairs but expect to spend a grand on a fix

Take the £600 and put it down as a lesson learnt..... There's no value in trying to repair it as it will always be well under market value due to it's history.

Category D is simply beyond economical repair. £600 for a 2004 Corsa with a dodgy gearbox seems like a good offer, I would bite their hand off.

Who told you box needs changing? I would suggest get an assessment and estimate for repairs from a reputable garage. You ought to have taken it straight to the garage as soon as you noticed that warning light.

I would suggest you have been fortunate to get 14 months trouble free motoring. Anyone with little knowledge would be better buying from a reputable dealer. Some might even take your Corsa as part ex?

These gearboxes are a ticking time bomb, i too would probably take the £600 and put it down to experience...but do as SB suggested first, it might be a simple fix for a Federation of Auto Engineers member, it might not, you have nothing to lose asking...this is not a gearbox for just anyone to diagnose.

Always always intensively research a potential purchase, thats why shysters want you to put a deposit down before you have chance to find out the finance is a rip off or the car is a known lemon, and take someone sharp and mechanically minded with you when you buy again.

Not sure why you are considering taking the car to a fast-fit tyre & exhaust centre when you appear to need a gearbox repair/replacement.

    Ah, you're a woman...

As it doesn't go into gear, you can't take it anywhere.
Get a scrap yard to come & pick it up.

If it was a Cat D write off only 2 weeks before you bought it then it is likely that the damage was fairly minor, it just means the insurance company would have not deemed it worth enough to repair. It might even has been purely cosmetic, panel beating and resprays can come in very expensive. I wouldn't worry about the Cat D.

Have you had the engine diagnostics? If so what are the error codes? The 02 sensors (oxygen sensors/lambda sensors) are there to ensure the catalytic converter is working properly and that the fuel isn't running through too lean or too rich. Its not a very pricey repair. However some garages will read a P0420 as an o2 sensor failure when it is much more likely to be the converter and then you get the code coming up again after the repair so the codes would be helpful.

As for the gearbox, if you have had it definitely confirmed that it is f***ed then I would take the £600 and think myself lucky. Who is offering you the £600? Not the garage who told you it needed replacing? Could they be trying to make a quick profit at your expense?

Whats it worth if you get the box fixed?

Normally small cars fetch decent money but it seems this is one exception, Reserve not met £1200 bid on ebay and thats a car with no faults.

I agree with above snap their hands off at £600. You will never get your money back on it. Even if you fix it for £300, You will struggle to sell it after.
