Room wanted to rent Mon-Fri in Derby

My son will be moving to Derby in the summer to start a new job at Rolls Royce. He would like to rent a furnished room with other young proffessionals who like sport especially golf. We don't know the area at all but would appreciate advice on best areas to live that are fairly quiet but have good links to major road, public transport etc.
He will only need a room Mon - Fri and pay max £300 a month to include all bills

Congratulations to him! A friend's son joined them about 3 years back - started in Derby too, and is now based in Norway and enjoying his job very much,

I don't think asking my friend for info would be much use to you, because it would be out-of-date, but dimbo61's suggestion should work - that's how my son got a room when he moved to Stoke for a job.

Might be worth consulting the HR where he's going to be working - they may be able to give advice.

He might find that some of the staff in the derby factory rent out a room under the " rent a room scheme"
Well done on your son getting into RR

As well as the easyroommate or spareroom sites he might find lodgings, rather than a room in a shared flat or house, on the Monday to Friday website. A young man like that could be an ideal lodger for the sort of people who would prefer to have the place to themselves at the weekends, especially if he's house-trained. Also, the employer might have an intranet-thingy where your son may be able to post up a request.

Hi there, I used to live in Derby and started out working for Rolls Royce.

If he's going in on a graduate or apprentice programme I think he'll really enjoy himself. Certainly the group I went in with were really good fun and their social events calendar is usually well packed.
I'd definately suggest contacting HR and seeing if there are any shares being offered via their intranet or if they know of anyone else on the scheme who is in a similar position.

Like all areas, Derby has nice bits and not so nice bits, expensive areas and cheaper ones. Personally I like the Littleover, Mickleover, Elvaston, Borrowash, Spondon, and Draycott areas - I am a little biased to these as they were my local haunts as a teenager and until recently my parents still lived in Littleover.

There are a few areas that used to be considered worse for reputation, but its been six years since I was in the area so I wouldn't really want to comment. My advice would be to go and view a few places to get a feel for the area - overall Derby is a great place to live IMO, especially since they have invested in the city centre.

I'm sure I'll get slated by some for saying this, but try to avoid the following areas:
    Sinfin
    Peartree
    Rosehill
    The Austin Estate
    Roads around Hartington St
    and probably Normanton

Littleover and Mickleover can be ok, and there's a golf course in Mickleover. The area around Ashbourne Road is ok too. Littleover is probably quite good for transport if he's at the Sinfin RR site. Mostly the area around the factory isn't too good.

I hope I don't sound like too much of a snob!

Hi, for easy access to all Derby sites (Moor Lane/Sinfin/Wilmore Road), then Chellaston, Alvaston, Shelton Lock are all close by, and decent areas. If he's on the grad scheme he will probably get moved round departments so those locations will be nice and close, and he could easily walk or cycle to work.

If he wanted to live a bit further out there's a frequent intersite bus which runs from Derby station, to Pride Park, and round in a loop covering all sites, so he could get to and from work by train.

As mentioned previously by CDC2011, there's often ads on the intranet offering rooms to rent, but he wouldn't be able to access that until he joins. HR may have a list - its definitely worth asking.

Congratulations to him, its a great company!
