I'd go along with Gunjack's older Thinkpad recommendations and would add in Dell's Vostro series which are well worth looking at in terms of reliability and robustness.0

May I express surprise that some regulars are proposing Toshiba ahead of Vaio and Samsung Laptops which IMO are the better made laptops along with macbooks? I am referring to new rather than 2ndhand (although Sony/Samsung 2nd hand laptops are also better built than most laptops sold by PCW etc)
I repair them for a living. Whilst the Vaios and Samsungs are better made than a lot of the PC World specials, they're not even in the same league as the business class ones, especially the batteries.
As regards the Thinkpad T series, you can drive a truck over a T60 or T61.0 -

true, and slightly newer than the T4x series......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
I'm planning on buying an i7 MacBook Pro later this year, big discounts to be had using the Apple Refurbished site - they come in new casings and have a full warranty too.0

I'd love to know why they put new casings on. Mine has been kicked around the floor, dropped 3ft and landed like /\ several times and generally been misused and abused for nearly 3 years I've had it. Other than a few light scratches on the base and a small 2mm mark on the lid and the worn keyboard (letters still all there though) the thing looks great when I clean it. If I spent £30 on a new keyboard and another £30 on a new base, other than the small mark on the lid it'd look like a new one.0 -

Mine looks a bit lived in too
I also agree with Gunjack about the Lenovo, I've got a company provided T4X and it's a great workhorse. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0
