your own employer won't lend to you??
me, I wouldn't thank you for a ring on tick. what if g/fs attitude to debt?Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
If you are unable to get an extension on your overdraft or pay for it on a credit card, there is no other option but to wait and save up. It is unlikely any other mainstream lender woukd provide you with finance if your own bank have said no.
Definitely do not go for high interest lenders like provident or pay day lenders, as this will just result in more debt that will spiral if not paid fully.
Sounds like you need to start paying off debts rather than seeking further finance which could damage your credit for 6 years if this "windfall" doesn't materialise. Do you really want to start married life with large amounts of debt?0 -
It might sound daft but why not propose with a 'temporary' ring whilst in Kenya, letting her know (or not - surprise, if she wouldn't mind that obviously) that there will be a special one later on?
It could be something funny for you both to look back on (I'm thinking haribo ring - but that might be a bit 'out there' for your tastes!) - you also get the benefit of making her smile twice
Just throwing a different idea out there, good luck whatever you do.0 -
If you know the deal why are you asking a forum what the best deal is?I'm 30 years old, not a wee dude just out of high school plus i work in financial services so know the deal. Just looking for the smallest interest possible to cover for 2-3 months.
It's not like I am buying some irrational purchase, it's an engagement ring not a jetski

1) work in fin services but not for a lender
2) know the deal about how debt can spiral and how interest works but not about short term lending
3) 'windfall' is in writing...just bad timing
4) debt reduction is happening with rest of said cash
5) being made by a friend so cash not credit card as she just does wee bits as a hobby
And lastly 6) jeweler friend won't be able to make it after hols due to new baby
Basically I can afford to take up to a £100 on interest as I will have it in september as i think it is worth doing.0 -
Thanks for the help btw, I'm not trying to be argumentative, just filling in the gaps0

In that case, can your friend not take payment in instalments?0

Must the ring be specially made? Does your g/f know about this, has she requested it, etc.? Do you have special or sentimental reasons for choosing this particular design?
I don't buy my other half much jewellery (she's not the type), but I proposed to her with my mother's engagement ring (my mother passed last week, but she gave me the ring many years before her death, as she stopped wearing it pretty much when she got married!).
It's unique (over 50 years old), and didn't cost me a penny, though it has enormous sentimental value. In pounds and pence though, it's probably worth, hmm, about £100?
What about looking around the second hand jewellers, pawn shops, etc.? You get better value for money on second hand jewellery, can often find something unique, and most pieces can be resized easily and cheaply.
If it really is a special or big deal, though, just bang it on a credit card

Aha, good point, reason is that she is a former jeweler herself!!!

Weaz, as you see from the similarity of names we are the same age. I still haven't learnt.
Ok let's think of it this way. Maybe a grass weave ring to explain how much you love her with a big IOU in September. Girls love originality and ai doubt she would want you in debt for the ring.0
