Windscreen not covered by insurance

Has anyone else come across this. I have just telephoned my car insurance as my windscreen has cracked (first time in 20 years).

I have just been informed that I do not have cover as I did not tick the additional extras column. Apparently I did tick to have my no claims discount covered (which I do every year with every Company). I have never had to choose to pay extra for windscreen cover before.

I always assumed you were covered with fully comprehensive car insurance??

Some companies have it as an optional extra these days.

Maybe you rushed the quote and didn't check everything as you should.

Becoming increasingly common as companies try and trim quotes down so that they look good on comparison sites.

You have to be very careful that the cover you get is the cover you think you're getting.

  • I wouldn't worry too much, but remember this when renewal comes round...oh and which company is it please so i know not to bother them with my business..

Ring round some of the smaller local screen companies as well as the usual suspects, and if you are on good terms with any small car dealers or independent garages have a word with them, they are bound to have a local windscreen company on tap.

Unless you have something exotic you might find a new screen is cheaper than you think.

I got stung by this a few weeks ago. I think my insurance company changed it on the renewal but I didn't pay much attention to it at the time. I KNOW I would have included it when taking out the insurance originally as it's so little extra. I've got a feeling the company I was with changed from offering just one type of fully comp to offering "basic" and "advantage" or something and being tight I went for the cheaper without reading it properly, lesson learned!

On the plus side to replace my windscreen was only £90 (excess would have been £70) so not too bad. Stay away from the "big names" and a local outfit should be able to do it fairly cheaply.

Edit to add - I WAS with Hastings if it helps anyone make a decision come renewal time

I would have assumed that to be one of the likely suspects doing this, thanks for that.

This. I was happily told once by a windscreen firm that a private job was half the price of an insurance one... we wonder why premiums are so high!

    Shop around a bit.

Which insurance company was that, please?

Now that you have reported this, they will have this incident down on your record, so you will need to disclose this as part of your claims/losses history if you approach other insurers for quotes.

Not my experience with Autoglass when I got a crack in the Z3's windscreen and didn't want to make a claim. Autoglass quoted £499 for a new windscreen and seal but missed the fact that the new windscreen also needs to be hot bonded into the frame. I finally got it done (windscreen, seal and hot bonded) for £374 by a BMW main dealer!

you have to factor in 90 day accounts
troops to be paid to action accounts etc etc
get dave the smelly in and he wants pound notes because he paid pound notes to get the screen, so its win win
