Loan for car from Jobcentre?

OP, is there local credit union in your area ? They might be your best bet if you find the banks saying no to you at the moment. While some think this is a wind up, I can see that it would not be that impossible to be in the OP's position, need a car to work but cannot afford one/get a loan until you have an income. Another option might be to look into any car share schemes in your area.
As far as I know the job centre would not loan you money for a car.
Best of luck.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Bit confused by the last response.
I thought you had a licence? £40 a month is nothing in relation to buying and running a car.
I do have a licence but that is for car. So I don't need separate one? You're right though now I've thought about itilikewatch wrote: »Even if you could borrow the money from JCP to buy a car you would have to pay it back - probably at a higher rate than £40 per month.
The £250 excess would only need to be paid if the scooter got damaged or stolen.
In your original post you said you already had a licence.
If you could afford to pay back a car loan whilst paying for insurance, tax, fuel and repairs you could certainly afford my suggestion.
Yeah my last response was a bit !!!!!! now I think about it lol. I think I just meant paying 40 up front which I don't have. I wouldn't have to pay back 40 a month if I got a loan from jobcentre but yeah it would add up in insurance and tax. i will look into it.OrkneyStar wrote: »OP, is there local credit union in your area ? Hi,
there is a credit union in my area so that might be worth a look. Not sure if they'd lend me enough to get a car while one JSA but I will try. Just skimmed a website and it says they can lend £100. Yeah don't think the Jobcentre will give me one unless I've been on benefits for 6 months. Like you say it's a bit a bit of a catch 22 scenario.
Thanks for the suggestions and kind words anyway.

You would have to undertake Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) in order to ride a scooter on a car licence, but this is provided at no extra cost when you sign up to most (all?) of the wheels to work schemes

Oh I see so as long as I have a licence for car I don't need a separate provisional to do the CBT? Okay thankyou.0

Depending on when you passed your driving test.
A 50cc scooter can be ridden by a full driving licence holder. You don't have to have L plates on either. You can also take a pillion passenger.0 -

As this person has said, depends on the date of your test, off the top of my head it must be before 1st Feb 20010 -
If you have a car driving licence
If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 February 2001, you must complete a CBT course to confirm your full moped rights.
If you passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001 you don't need to complete a CBT course to ride a moped. However, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) recommends that you do.

Exceptions to applying for a Provisional Licence or doing the CBT
If your full car driving licence was issued before 1 Feb 2001, then you already have a full moped entitlement on that licence (full category P entitlement), so you are not legally required to do the CBT and can ride a moped without restrictions. I strongly urge you to do the CBT anyway as it is proven to significantly reduce the number of accidents that new riders have!
If you passed your car driving licence from 1 Feb 2001 onwards, then you do not need to apply for a provisional moped licence as your driving licence was issued with a full category P entitlement. However you must do your CBT to validate the moped entitlement on that licence. Once you've completed the CBT you have a full moped licence and can ride mopeds without the learner rider restrictions. The DL196 certificate that you receive from doing your CBT in this case only expires with your driving licence when you turn 70.

OP - my local credit union gets asked quite frequently about loans for vehicles to get to work. They will loan for this reason (max loan is £500) but ideally like you to have saved a small amount for at least 10 weeks. Sometimes this saving rule is waived provided you can prove that you can repay the loan - they will include benefit money as income & then your outgoings in detail. APR is 1-2%, so it is a really good rate.
Why don't you try your local credit union? And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...0 -
