Save water and gas on a combi-boiler

Not sure if this has been covered but as you may know there are thermostically controlled valves available which can be fitted for about £150 which reduce water and gas consumption on a combi-boiler. However you can achieve the same effect by following this procedure;
  1. put the plug in
  2. turn the hot tap on just enough to turn the boiler on
  3. wait until the water starts to become hot
  4. turn the tap full on
Turning the tap full on from the start slows down the heating effect, wastes water and gas.

If you are on a water meter, more reason to follow this.

    Good advice - but it also pre- supposes that the user has read the handbook and turned OFF the "instant hot water" facility that many boilers have. The one where the water in the tank is always kept up to temperature so that on short pipe runs the hot water arrives almost instantly.

    Even though these tanks are small, keeping them up to temperature if you're at work all day is a complete waste.
