Santander charge for not paying in £££ monthly...

Options
Morning all...

On my to do list this morning was to close my Santander account.... I recently took out a Halifax Reward account to take advantage of the £5 per month "reward", plus I got £100 for joining. Santander also sometimes offer £££ for joining, so I thought I'd close that account and maybe re-open one in the future....

This morning though I got an email from Santander saying that charges are going to be made on my account...

I've thought it over and over and the only thing I can think is that because I have not been paying my wages into the account for the last 2 months, they are going to charge me a penalty.

I'm now going to check whether this is the case, but while doing so I wondered if anyone here knows more about it and can think of a way of getting out of the charge(s)? I have thought about still calling them this morning to close the account. If I did that, would they still be able to take the money and if so how would they do it?

Also, if they take the money very soon it will take me into overdraft because I' on a zero balance at the moment.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Many thanks

Max

Like many current accounts nowadays it is stipulated in the T&C's that the account has a minimum monthly funding requirement. It rarely is salary specific, any credit will do. You can still satisfy those terms by using FP's in/out which takes seconds to do.

You could ask nicely to have the small charge removed, you could assure them it won't happen again. If you don't succeed first time try again with a different CSA. You can't however insist as you have fallen foul of the terms.

You could close the account, they possibly will write off the charges especially if you don't use the account. It's not uncommon for small charges to be written off.

There will be no excuse for going overdrawn as you have been advised in advance that a charge is forthcoming, therefore if you can't get the charge removed you should credit the account now before the charge is taken.
  • Many thanks for the helpful reply.

I've called them up and the closure is now taking place. I should have made it clearer above that the charge is not even showing yet. I've received the email this morning stating a charge will be made, but it does not state what it is for, how much, when, etc. And it does not show on the account. Hence why I hoped that if I closed the account now, it would close before the charge is applied to the account.

Well, I've done it now so I guess all i can do is sit tight and hope for the best!

Is it definately an e-mail from Santander?

Not a "please log in through this link to find out more" kind of e-mail...?

Did you have any messages in your online banking to back this up?

    :)
"Part P" is not, and has never been, an accredited electrical qualification. It is a Building Regulation. No one can be "Part P qualified."

doesn't have this problem apply it and keep 1 pound in it for like 4 yrs and you wont get charged.. (thats an example)

if your getting charged it must be an account that NEEDS TO BE FUNDED..
    HSBC (Main A/C)
    Halifax Back up A/C
    Lloyds (Spending) A/C
    RBS Back up A/C
