Hi all

i have a 2003 Mondeo 2 Ghia X and currently it needs 3 jobs doing, along with 2 new tyres

However just wondering what order to have them done in and likely cost

Jobs are:

Front brake pipes (corroded)
Rear subframe bushes, will upgrade to Poly (set is £56)
Nearside rear wheelbearing

so any idea of cost, and how to tackle them? all at once best, but finances dont allow

Are you going to do the work yourself, brake pipes and wheel bearings should be pretty easy. I'm not sure about the rear subframe you should check a workshop manual.

Each to their own, i wouldn't dream of trying to take my computer to pieces. Sorry but not sure what i garage would want, but get a price before giving them the go ahead.
It might be worth looking to see if you have a tech college near you that teaches motor repairs, those places are often looking for cars for the students to practice on and would be cheaper.

Rough guess, £400-£500. based on my own limited experience - wheel bearings normally about £300 all in , but looking at everything you want doing, a decent local garage will probably do you a deal.

You can buy a whole Mondeo for £300. Did you actually pay that much ?Bearing and hub costs about £40 and max 1 hour to fit. Depending on which front pipes I'd say about £70-£120 fitted and about 1hour max on the bush's

Front brake pipes and rear wheel bearing are the most pressing although I don't know why its needing brake pipes because as far as I were aware they were alloy and don't corrode although if painted the paint does come off.

The rear subframe is an hours labour per side if you are poly bushing. Including the bushes it cost me £200. Get the superflex ones from Burton Engineering and not the Powerflex ones from Ebay as they fail on the front again within about 50,000 miles. The Superflex ones are thicker top lips.

i have a link on the burton engineering ones at £56, so plus 2 hours labourt i guess £200 sounds right

I will check the owners club on the brake pipes mind

I had a 04 plate Mondeo with 165k on the clock and the brake pipes were never flagged up either during MOT or servicing.

Also are you sure it is definitely worn rear wheel bearings and not the tyres? I never needed to change the bearings in my car in the 75k I did with it. Did get worn bearing like noise though from the rear and I have exactly the same noise from my 40k 59 plate MK4 Mondeo and its not the wheel bearings but the tyres.

On my wife's FTO it is a common thing and caused by the camber of the rear tyres wearing the inside edge of the tyre in such a mannner that you get a droning sound similar to failing wheel bearings. Swapping the front tyres with the rear gets rid of it for several thousand miles. There are many FTO owners who've paid £400 odd to have the rear bearings changed only to find it made exactly the same noise :D
