Any other good quality home insurers like Hiscox?

Our home insurance is with Hiscox as we like the quality of their claims service. My husband is an amateur photographer with some valuable camera gear and Hiscox's worldwide all-risks cover is great for us.

Just had our renewal through. Are there any other 'high-end' insurers that I could get quotes from? It goes against my MSE side to renew insurance without at least comparing quotes, but I know Hiscox isn't comparable to the cheapy insurers I used to use before them.

Any recommendations?

Hiscox do both a direct product (505) aimed at the MNW market and a via broker only product (606) aimed at the HNW.

HNW are easier to compare and you can see a list of products and their rating here:

Defaqto dont break out the MNW products unfortunately but their 5* standard products should give you a few names to check out:

We're only MNW I'm afraid and on their 505 scheme. :) One day we'll be 606 if I keep my MSE grip on our finances. :D

Thanks - I'll look at the other 5* names for some comparisons.

For MNW (and HNW) the key facts should be policy cover rather than price. If you contact an insurance broker then they should be able to provide you with quotes from several MNW contracts - I can think of Towergate (I don't like them), Aviva, Zurich, Hiscox you know, but there are several others.

I don't know the definition of MNW and HNW but I also have 505.
Incidentally my OH is also an amateur photographer.
I really like the fact that our valuables and personal possesions are covered anywhere in the world as normal policies have too low a limit for personal possession.

I am also staunchly MSE but for me it's about value and not price.
I agree with weejonnie that if you are MNW then cover should be important rather than price, but I can't help shopping around either.
I have not found anything that gets remotely close to the Hiscox 505 although I would generally still look.

I dont think there are any universal definitions of MNW and HNW, many actually define it with premium rather than sum insured but that has never been a good proxy for me given there are many other factors impact premium.

The most recent numbers I saw was MNW > £85,000 of content and HNW > £175,000 of content
  • My parents are with Ecclesiastical and i have to say they were over £2k less than Hiscox and other insurers at renewal, and when they had to make a claim, Ecclesiastical were fantastic. (Sorry this reads like an ad for them!). Honestly, i really do recommend them - would suggest you give them a call directly, or go via a broker who works with them. Aviva i believe also have something similar 'high end' product. - hope that helps.
