Brown ones are brown and like a wood colour and white ones are white like the colour of clouds.

Oh dear, if that is true (which I don't think it is lol) they have been watching me since 2007! Award notices normally come in white, and non-standard letters in brown imho.

Any official Tax docs, benefits letters etc are more often than not sent in an A5 "brown" envelope, and always arrive on a Friday.

So - Don't open any A5, Brown envelopes on a Friday, it'll only ruin your weekend and you can't do anything about it anyway.

In fact, always collect your last post for the weekend on a Thursday and leave the rest til Monday. I've been doing that for the last 6 years as if it's not the Tax / Benefits office its a bill of some sorts.

Didn't explain myself properly, when you go on the phone to renew your tax credits you are given two options, did you receive your renewal notice in a brown or white envelope? Does this make sense now?
  • Heard white envelopes need to renew by phone or paper and brown envelopes do nothing this is because brown envelopes are unemployed or people on benefits where hmrc already know income.

The white envelopes are to sign and send back , the brown are to ring n speak to someone . I received mine in a brown 2 years ago and had to ring through info, last year white n this year white. I rang to renew with my white envelope this year and it says on the answer phone if you ve received in white envelope you don t need to speak to anyone unless you have changes to make to your claim!
