Time for a new boiler?

Hi Everyone

Really hoping I can get some opinions on a new boiler please?

Basically, I'm living in my grandma's old house and with it came the old boiler. I got up this morning to find that the electrics had gone in the boiler which has left me with no hot water.

For the past couple of weeks, whenever I turn the water or heating on, the back pilot light behind the fire in the living room has seemed quite high and extremely orange like something else is burning under ther. There's also a smell that comes with it that's like burning plastic/paper?

Like it said it's a really old boiler and the last guy that came to service it says that they're not really made anymore so if anything went seriously wrong I'd struggle to get replacement parts.

I'm thinking we might have to shell out for a completely new boiler but haven't got a clue how much this would cost? I have a big boiler in the airing cupboard and I think there's also a tank in the loft?

Any help would really be appreciated please as I have't got a clue what to do! :( I live in Leicester so if anyone can recommend and elecrician that's familiar with boilers, that'd really help please!

In the mean time I'll get in contact with the guy that did my last boiler service to see if he knows of an electrician that's familiar with this type of boiler
.
Thanks
Jen

    Hi.

It sounds like the boiler is dangerous. Please do not attempt to use it until you have had a GSR person look at it.

It might be that it needs a good service, but prepare for bad news and a new boiler.

Do you have an immersion heater in the cylinder for hot water?

    GSR.
Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)

Why did you continue running it with such a visible and obvious fault?
You don't have a boiler in the cupbaord, you have a hot water tank, possibly with an immersion heater as a back up-if so, you can use that for now.
You don't want an electrician, you need a GSR RGI, as stated above.
    Make and model?
