Laptop Keeps Turning Off!

Hi All, Me again! You may remember me from when I asked for some advice when my partner spilt beer over his laptop. (This Thread)

We took the advice given and riced it and its been working OK'ish since apart from the keyboard and shorting out. We haven't got round to buying a new keyboard yet and the OH has been using the on screen keyboard.

Anyhow, there's just a couple of things I wanted to ask if that's OK. When my OH moves the laptop he picks it up from the bottom left and it shorts out and turns itself off. I was just wondering if that problem is easily fixed?

The other problem is my OH's daughter was here the other day and wanted to check her Facebook, my partner said to her she would have to use the on screen keyboard and out of habit she went to use the keyboard and it shorted itself out again.

Just wondering if anyone had any ideas please? Thanks as always.

Alison:)

I've read both your posts - you seam like a nice person, so I feel a bit mean about what I'm going to ask.

I note that your OH took it toi bits, and then had trouble putting it back, eg certain item omitted? I just wonder if he found out where all the screws went? Unless you keep a map of where they go when you undo them you will not remember. Even if he did put them back, did he put the right size in the right hole? Because if not, when you lift the lappie it is possible the too tall screw in the wrong hole could cause a short. Once one has made this mistake it is hard to correct. Nest answer for now is use the lappie on a tray and don't lift it.

Regarding the keyboard causing the lappie to shut down, difficult to say unless there are stuck keys, and the combination causes the shut down, or possibly the keyboard ribbon inserted incorrectly? You can get around this by using a USB keyboard, cheap as chips, and just undo the keyboard ribbon; yr OH should by now know how to do that?

    Hi Robmar0se,

Thank you so much for your reply and it explaining it so well. The OH never managed to put that bit back in, it was like a jigsaw puzzle that didn't fit! I don't think he will be unscrewing laptops again he should of just been patient and just waited for the rice to work. Oh well we live and learn!

The OH didn't draw a map of where things were meant to go, he was just stropping and throwing bits all over the table like a mad man! Your theory about putting the wrong size screw in sounds a definite possibility.

He definitely doesn't want to open it up again, he was lucky to get it working after the mess he made the first time, I just thought Id ask in case it was caused by a simple setting in the menu or something.

Brilliant idea about the USB keyboard, I shall have a look out for one next time I pop into town and Im sure I saw a laptop tray last week in Poundland so that should sort it out.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me.

    Many Thanks

    Alison:)
