gas boiler left on while on holiday...

My annual gas boiler check-up was carried out while I was away on holiday (against my prior knowledge) and the gas engineer left the hot water on for 14 days. Anyone know how I can calculate how much this may have cost me? (It's an old, inefficient gas boiler with no thermostat that therefore will not temporarily switch off when the hottest temperature has been reached.)

How did he get in?, is the tank, pipes lagged?0

Why don't you have a bath, so the cylinder is cold, then read the meter before and after heating the cylinder up. Multiply by 14, and you have a rough figure. Probably half that.0

Thanks, Pincher, but you're paying to keep the water hot round the clock, not just to heat it once a day, no?
Ollski, he got in with a key from the rental agent. No, no lagging...0 -

Isn't it on a timer? Everywhere I've lived it has been.
Just because you have a timer doesn't mean everyone else has a timer.0 -

Ours has a timer but when its mild (like now) we just use it as and when as it has an overide switch that you can put on when you want.Back on the trains again!0

The agent should have obtained permission for people to enter your home. If they didn't then they broke the law. Have you spoken to the agent about this aspect?0

It will cut off at some point, you didn't have steam coming out of the taps when you returned did you?0 -
I'd gave a guess on a gravity system with no insulation, left on 24 hours a day but with no usage of the heated water about 3 - 6 kw a day. Working it out on tier 1 prices between 18 - 36p a day, so maybe a fiver worst case.0
