Can i get extra help whilst on Maternity and Partner Unemployed?

My partner lost his job last year as a result of his employer going into liquidation and he has struggled to find work since. He is currently claiming job seekers and we get a little more help from Tax Credits. I am due to start maternity leave in a months time and my salary will drop as i only get SMP. We have struggled for years to keep up with our financial commitments ie. Mortgage, Loans, credit cards etc and have done so far but things are now becoming too much. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any other benefits we might be entitled to? I will return to work after my maternity.

Any advice would be appreciated.

There are no benefits that will help with credit cards or loans, but a drop in income might be alleviated with an increase in housing benefit or council tax benefit. You might want to ask your creditors if you can pay a reduced amount for a period of time, or if they can freeze interest. It would be worth posting for help with this on the Debtfree Wannabe board.

Don't forget the extra benefits you get as a parnet as you will get Child Tax credits and child benefit once the baby is born.

My partner signed off the dole because he was offered a temporary job which didnt last as long as we expected so he only signed back on again about 2 months ago so it has sent us back to the start again! I have taken into account the extra tax credits and child benefit and it still leaves us very short. I have also approached some of the companies with regard to reduced payments etc and they are very unhelpful. I have sent in a letter of complaint to my bank as i was disgusted in their response to my approach for temporary help. The only one that has been any help are the water rates. Does anyone know if i would qualify for a maternity grant? i didnt claim one for my first son as we where both working at the time? Thanks for your replies!

Unfortunately you won't get the maternity grant as it has to be your first child, but it is important to remember that the first £100 p/week of SMP is disregarded for tax credits purposes - this may have a effect on your entitlement. Hth a little xx
