DVD/CD combo on laptop not reading discs

Hi, just this morning my laptop drive has started refusing to read discs. The drive is recognised by both the BIOS and OS, claimed to be 'working properly'. I can hear it whirring slightly, and the PC can still control the eject function.
I have already updated both the BIOS and drive's firmware. I have also just finished an Avast boot time virus scan and am currently running MalwareBytes full scan, but I don't hold out much hope for it finding anything related to this... Or indeed anything at all.
It's a Dell Inspiron 1564, about 2 years old now...
Anyone have any other ideas?

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

try using an earlier restore point
system restore
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/products/features/system-restore
go back to a date when it was working
if that fails then easy enough to source another drive off ebay and swap it (normally 1 screw underneath) and the plastic bezel off the front pops off and goes on the replacementEx forum ambassador
