distructive dog

I have a patterdale terrier, she is on the small side, but very cute and loveable. However, her one fault is she is very distructive, every toy we buy her, be it a football, soft dog toy, rubber toy,,, she has to kill it. Yet my mam has the same breed of dog, who plays with every toy and they last a life time.

Can some one please tell me how we keep all toys in one piece for more than 24 hours maximum please :D

Is your home intact or is she destroying that as well? Either way, ask a vet to see if her teeth are ok and not giving get any discomfort. Some pets are more destructive than others - maybe yours is more playful than your mums.

yes my home is in tact, she has never tried to eat furniture or rip curtains or anything,,, you can go out and do shopping etc, she will be curled up on her cushion when you come back. Her teeth are fine, had mot at vets last week, she just has to rip every toy to shreds as quickly as possible.

That's good to know. If she is just playing with and destroying her own things then I wouldn't worry too much. I'd just make sure that her toys were tough and didn't pose a health hazard for her.

Kongs are pretty indestructible and I am not sure if they still do the deal where you get your money back if your dog actually manages to destroy it

My German Shepherd has two. He has the standard rubber one, which is very very tough. They are like a funny shaped rubber ball with a hole in the middle that you can put treats, peanut butter etc in. They bounce in random directions due to their shape so are good to chase!

He also has a 'wobbler' which is the same shape as the original kong but is bigger and made of tough plastic. It has a weighted base and has a small hole in it so you can fill it with treats and the dog has to wobble it to get the treats out.

No matter how hard he tries my boy has not managed to break either of them!

Try googling to see what they are like. Just make sure you get the right size for your dog

I had a session with a behaviourist because my border terrier chews his toys to destruction within minutes and then moves on to socks, shoes, towels, blankets, his bed, etc.
The behaviourist told me to go to car boot sales and buy him 30 (yes, thirty) baby stuffed toys ... must be baby ones cos other toys have buttons for eyes. He is only allowed the toys under supervision (cos he will eat a little bit of the stuffing, or nibble off an ear) but he is now much happier with his huge toy selection.
He also has this is all three sizes from Pets at Home and they are lasting well.

Milly (my mum's Patterdale) does this!
Especially to cheap toys, she finds the weak spot and rips them to shreds. But if you give her balls or tug toys (the knotted ones without the plastic or the frayed ends) she will happily play for it for hours on end.

I think it has something to do with the prey instinct the breed really has, sometmes they can be more desturctive that others depending how it comes out......Mum just gets her the tug toys from Poundland or Wilinsons and keeps away from the rubbery/plastic ones as she will destroy them
