NPower Query
I use NPower for my gas and electricity in my small 2 bedroomed house. I live there for around 2 days a week. The rest of the time I live at my girlfriends house. When away everything is switched off, the boiler is off at the mains. The only thing on is the fridge freezer and the security alarm.
My girlfriend has two children and a three bedroom house so all appliances are used everyday. My bills though are higher than hers. In fact she has built up almost £300 credit whereas my account is £50 in debit. I have had issues with NPower over my bills but they insist they are accurate. I have had online billing since 2011 but have never seen any details on my online account so I doubt the meter has ever been read. The bills seem to be calculated on my readings alone. These readings are correct but I am convinced I am being overcharged somehow. Is there any way to have NPower carry out a reading or assess the meters to my property, preferably without costing me?

Your GF may well be on a contract tariff where as you are on a standard tariff.0

What tariffs are you both on? As there are different prices depending on which tariff you choose to be on.
If its too expensive shop around and find a cheaper tariff or supplier.Turning our clutter to top up our house deposit: £3000/£303.05 we're on our way!0 -
So what is your actual kWh usage?
Standing charges will still apply whether you use the utilities or not.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
You have not said how much each of you are paying so unfortunately your credit/debit statement doesn't tell us anything, but there are some things you can do.
1) make sure if the appliance is off that it is actually off, my old CRT Tv uses 500w of power just to be on standby ( i know because i have an accurate electric test kit for testing electric meters for accuracy - not for fun I try and earn a living testing electric meters, so i know its right)
2) if your still convinced somethings wrong then contact your supplier and get the meter checked - meters do go wrong, don't be fooled with what the supplier tells you about "your bills are correct" or the majority of meters are correct, they will want to charge you , sometimes up to £90 if they find your meter is correct .... if you know its wrong do it, you may even be able to claim a refund if they have been overcharging you.
If you have a sub meter you will have to use an independent tester like me but since you are being billed by NPower this doesn't seem to be your case
3) make sure your on the best tariff, over the last few years it has become very difficult for the average person to know if they are on the best tariff, OFGEM have just ruled that your supplier now has to tell you the best tariff so a phone call may save you a bundle.0
