Council Tax Rebate Question

Hello All,
I have been unemployed now for two years. During that time I have still been paying council tax. I haven't ever requested assistance from the Government for assistance with paying the council tax. I'm now struggling to pay council tax so will apply for assistance with council tax.
Can someone tell me if its possible to claim for the two years that I've paid council tax?
Cheers
Carlton

Unfortunately not. The maximum period for a backdate for working age customers is 6 months and you need to show what we call 'continuous good cause' for not claiming earlier.
Check your councils website - I did a google and found this - I don't live or work fo them but it's a good example
http://www.north-ayrshire.gov.uk/CouncilAndGovernment/Benefits/CouncilTaxBenefit/CouncilTaxBenefit-BackdatedClaims.aspxI currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

No you can't is the answer. You should have claimed when you could have done so 2 years ago.
This goes for all benefits.
Claim it or lose it!!0 -
Wow!
I really wish I had claimed earlier.
If you're really sure I can't claim it back I won't bother trying.
Thanks for responding....0 -
You should lodge a claim for your ongoing council tax even if you cant get backdating (which I would agreed is extremely unlikely in your case).I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
