Laundering for less

I'm on the prowl for good quality, but good value laundry detergent, with a view to stocking up. I prefer products that will go straight into the drum, and tend to buy enough for several years at a time when I find a good offer. I've been using the liquid capsules for the last 3 years or so for convience, plus an amazing price at Iceland! It seems that we've gone full circle, because concentrated "gels" - which I read to be liquids - seem to be the latest "innovation" in laundry.

What's the maximum price you will pay per wash (detergent, not fabric softener), and which is your preferred product?

  • I usually spend a max of 10p a wash for a branded detergent. My last good deal was from Amazon massive box of Persil which was £9 inc delivery. Usually stock up when good offers.

  • I haven't tried that because I don't buy laundry detergent any more, I make my own "laundry gloop" now. I made about 15 litres of the stuff recently for about two quid or less. That's a year's supply to me.

One way you can easily cut your laundry costs down is to turn the heat down ten degrees or more and never do a mini-load. In fact the water-heater on my machine doesn't work so I wash everything in cold water now. There is no discernible difference in cleaning except that I chuck a bit of Napisan or that Oxy stain-removing stuff in with the whites every now and then when it needs it.

I use either Tesco's Value washing powder or Aldi's Almat Stain Lift which is excellent.

I work in a plant nursery and am sometimes covered it wet compost, it works on those clothes.
  • I used to like the scent of L!dl's liquid detergent. It cleaned as well as anything else I've ever used and it's quite inexpensive, especially if you use half of the manufacturer's recommended quantity.

I use laundry balls and have done for about 15 years now. I also use a great stain remover occasionally from Aldi which removes anything and everything. Washing powder is such a con, same as fabric conditioner.

Try soap nuts..about £7 for a KG and that has lasted me over a year to date with about half a bag left and I do at least 3 washes a week.

Yes, i use that from time to time. Its very thin but does the job! We are 3 adults though and dont have "dirty" washing as such. Ours only needs freshening.
I like Lidls Fromil liquid stuff. Its around £2.39 for 20 washes and has a great smell!!

Thanks, recipe plse? I wash clothes at 30 degrees, but have a thing about using a good high temperature for bedding and towels, gotta kill, kill, kill bugs.

I've thought about both but do like my laundry to smell scented.

Add a couple of drops of lavender oil to the powder drawer.
