I use a bowl, but it gets a thorough clean and bleaching regularly. The things I can't stand are those plastic draining racks. yuk, I've seen some pretty rank examples of those! And they're too big to fit in the sink for a good scrub and soak in bleach!

i don't use a bowl....my sink is really quite small so putting a bowl inside that would really limit the space i have.

Definitely a bowl here. Smallish so it saves on water. The water you need to run before the hot comes in goes into the bowl and then the garden - I'm in the driest part of the country and on a meter and a hose pipe ban.

There's only me so not that much washing up. Useful for soaking bits too whilst still being able to use the sink if necessary. Veg prep bits go into it then onto the compost heap whilst the food is cooking.

The comments re the bowl and cloth are right - your cloths/scrubbie/etc are much more likely to be germ laden. Tell your delicate flower that he can wash up in the sink but you'll stand for no more untruthful comments re germs.

  • Well, not strictly untruthful but just inaccurate and very possibly misled. I'm getting a bit bored with all this "germs lurking everywhere being a danger to all and sundry" hysteria. I blame the adverts on the telly. And wonder how our grannys ever made it to adulthood.

Now, if someone could help me stop chipping my best glasses when I'm rinsing them under the tap I'd be very grateful indeed.

    .

My sentiments exactly. Do we have adverts warning us of the dangers of tea towels or should I resort to paper plates and thereby ensure no washing up ever need happen again? :rotfl: personally I prefer a few germs, means my immune system gets a work out ;)

I think we need better campaigns on teaching some of the public to learn to wash their hands after using the toilet :(

    And FWIW I have a bowl :)

Ok - so the hubby and I are at odds over this!

I like to use a plastic basin in the kitchen sink for doing the dishes. I feel it softens the "blow" when washing glass and sensitive stuff ( he KNOWS I'm clumsy-duff) but he thinks they're germs harbouring "things" that are justr no good. We do also have a half-sink as well.

The questions are - do you use a plastic bowl for doing your dished in? What are your thoughts? ARe they germ harbouring items of illness as my hubby suggests (despite the fact he hasn't fallen ill from it in two years plus:rotfl:) or not (is there something in this)?

    Thanks in anticipation

    Snowy

We all harbour 'things' that are 'just no good' and they're a lot closer to home than the freakin' washing up bowl.
Use the bowl in these drought ridden time-it saves water

I use a 2 bowl system, 1 filled with hot soapy water and another with cold water with a slosh of vinegar in it that I rinse the dishes in. I started doing this when I lived in a hard water area to keep the lime scale down and carried on when I moved because the dishes come out lovely and streak free.

And it stopped me breaking glasses under the tap :D

Bowls are easy enough to keep clean and are much cheaper to replace than the sink if you get any horror stains and chips.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

  • I don't like using a bowl personally, but it is how home economics at school taught washing up, it is lighter on water usage and you can use the water on the grass or similar during drought years like this one.

    .

I wonder if this is the main reason for lots of people. Home economics teachers have them because pupils consider plugs too be very desirable items.:)
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D
