  • I looked up about the ring wire, about a year ago the BT man put in a new socket so I assume it does not have the ring wire then? as was mentioned only by old sockets. I have not looked though yet,

If the new socket is a NTE5. like this http://www.run-it-direct.co.uk/nte5-nte5a-bt-openreach-socket.html

Then by removing the two small screws in front and pulling off (gently) the lower front panel, you should find a test socket behind. If you plug your router in there, and do a test, this should give the best speedtest reading (excluding any issues with yr router (possible) or lappie (unlikely).

You may find that the line needs to be re-calibrated, in which case you need to pressurise TT (AOL) to do this. Incidentally the BT speedtest link I gave you earlier should be able to tell you what the max on the line is>

We now know that you can get speeds a lot faster than 3-4mbps, you have a problem thats for sure, there is a question whether you could get faster speeds for less money looking elsewhere?

I believe that AOL only offers a 8mbps service for broadband only customers (£15pm?); maybe you should look elsewhere, eg Plusnet gives you a 16mbps line, with 10gb monthly download, 6 months free, then £6.49 pm, plus a free router. This would also force a retuning of the line as 3-4mbps is too low.

However, once you have the max speed from the BT speedtest, and with the info you now have (tell them that you have a new master socket), bully the AOL tech guys to recalibrate yr line (usually takes a couple of weeks once started).

    Go for it!
  • thanks everyone for info.

When I first joined AOL, it was on the old broad band one, you know, the little package they send you, where if you have two pcs, only one person can connect at once.

Then it was suggested at the time by a family member to buy netgear router from ebay, which I did, they said that myself and husband can use our pcs and be on line at the same time without having to wait until the other one was finished. So I did this.

So the netgear and router is not what AOL offered or gave, in fact their offer of same was more expensive then the one I bought from ebay. But as for contract wise I am on the old broad band contract I believe, even though AOL know now I have netgear as when before I rang up with a problem they asked me what I was on now and I told them.

There is nothing in yr AOL contract, or any other obligation to use the AOL router (in fact at one point AOL used a cut down version of the Netgear dg834 router). So don't worry about that. If you can connect via yr NTE5 master socket as above and do a bt speedtest, you can then call AOL and get them to reclaibrate yr line.
