Windows defender not working

Hi I am clearing up a PC for DH's friend and have discovered that windows defender isn't working. I have tried downloading it from file hippo but it won't install or repair.

At the moment the laptop is running Avira free and windows firewall.

Is that enough?

Thanks, does that run in the back ground ?

I did download it but uninstalled it once I had cleared the malware.

Update it (if you didn't) and run again. No the free version need to be run manually at least once a week.

2nd for malwarebytes, its the best freeware malware remover out there. free version requires manual update, but you do really only have to run it once a week, so update, run scan, leave for a week or two.
