Auto box car for newly disabled wife

My wife has developed a chronic sciatica problem overnight and even through it is on the mend she has been told she will have impared mobility in her left leg for a long time so changing gear in her current car will be impossible.

We need an urgent change of car to get an automatic which she can drive.

Any suggestions of a reliable medium sized car which would be suitable.

Budget upto 12K don't care if it is new or second hand but must be reasonably roomy. Fuel & insurance costs aren't a problem.

I know this is an open topic but I need to move fairly fast as she is going demented with boredom as she literally can't walk more than 50 metres

I suspect a second hand car will be more sensible as you seem to have to make new automatics a special order.

Thanks

Modern automatics compare very favourably with manuals. Why not start of with a Honda Jazz CVT-7. Easily within your budget as a new car, written up very favourably by the motoring press, including Honest John, provided it is big enough for you.

Sorry to hear the reason for your post, Geomot.

Suggest you post in http://honestjohn.co.uk clik The Backroom - Discussion.

You'll get even more suggestions from 'sensible!!??' motor addicts there!!

As well as the auto aspect, you'll maybe need to think on the getting in & out ease, too.

Zafira is good value & based on Astra, so a big 'medium' car.

Mazda 5 is another thought, but might be tight on your budget.

MY mums got a Focus 1.6 Automatic. Pleasure to drive, has all the gadgets and gizmos, cheap to run, cheap to insure and a massive dealer network shoudl something go wrong. Best thing is the size, not too big (easy to park etc) and not too small either (boot size etc).

We had a similar problem when my wife had shoulder problems and could not change gears.

We bought a new Honda Civic auto three years ago, surprisingly roomy and solid build quality, problem I have now is that my misses loves it so much she will not let me change it. :(
  • Looksee here.... scroll down to see lots from £8 for mid size upwards.

Hope wifey is on the mend soon...!
